Wisdom in Life’s Brevity
In a world that’s obsessed with productivity, anti-aging creams, and living life to the fullest, the Bible teaches that we should have a radically different focus. The Bible says that we should face our mortality honestly and let that truth lead us to wisdom.
There is a well-known prayer in Psalm 90:12 that says “Teach us to realize the brevity of life, so that we may grow in wisdom.” An answer to this prayer would remind us how short life is, how close death can be, and what that reality means for us. When we realize the brevity of life, we become more inclined to pursue real wisdom—wisdom rooted in Scripture—and to live it out in our daily choices.
Acknowledging our brevity is one of Scripture’s most sobering and liberating calls. Whether you have walked with Jesus for decades or are simply curious about what the Christian faith says regarding the shortness of life, this truth matters deeply.
Echoes Across the Bible
Scripture repeats the theme of life’s brevity throughout its pages. God repeatedly teaches us to live with our eyes wide open to the reality that our time is short and that He has numbered our days.
In Psalm 39:4 God teaches us to pray “Lord, remind me how brief my time on earth will be. Remind me that my days are numbered – how fleeting my life is.” When we pray this prayer, we ask God to give us the wisdom and grace to remember our end. And to take seriously how short our days are so that we live differently because of it.
James 4:14 delivers a memorable warning: “How do you know what your life will be like tomorrow? Your life is like the morning fog – it’s here a little while, then it’s gone.” We can’t see or control the future. Wisdom tells us to make our plans knowing that life could end unexpectedly. We should arrange our lives in light of eternity and remain ready for what comes next.
Living in Light of Eternity
God does not remind us of life’s brevity to drive us into fear, despair, or frantic attempts to accomplish everything before time runs out. He reminds us in order to awaken us. Because our days are limited, they are precious. Because eternity is real, the choices we make today matter.
Wisdom does not merely acknowledge that life is short; it asks how we should live that short life. Are we seeking God, loving others, forgiving freely, and investing ourselves in what will endure? Are we ready to stand before the One who gave us our days?
We cannot control how much time remains, but we can decide how faithfully we will use our time. May we live with open eyes, humble hearts, and an eternal perspective. May we trust in Christ and refuse to waste our lives on things that will soon pass away.
Life is brief, but a life surrendered to God is never meaningless.
